South Carolina Showcase for April 25, 2013

A former cottage parent who has maintained strong ties with Connie Maxwell Children’s Home was honored recently at the Greenwood campus on her 90th birthday. Gladese Parsons served as a cottage mother for 29 years on the main campus with her husband, Buster. A party was held at Connie Maxwell Baptist Church, where Gladese continues to be active with the senior adult program. Ben Davis, president of Connie Maxwell, said, “I have always thought of our cottage parents as our heroes, and Gladese Parsons is one of our finest.” She is pictured with some of the children she helped raise (from left): Nolan Tolson, Connie McClain Whitmire, Peggy Jackson Taylor, Virginia McClain Hatley, Bobby Ray Field, Danny Ray Field, Benny Candler and Evelyn Fant Cauley.

 

On Feb. 23, 175 North Greenville University students joined volunteers from Greenville-area churches and ministries for REVEAL, an annual one-day service event promoting community service and evangelism. The event was hosted by the school’s Baptist Student Union. Students worked alongside volunteers for Camp Marietta, Miracle Hill ministries and the Greenville Women’s Clinic. Work sites included a sports camp, a food pantry and a thrift store, and students served food and prayed with men and women at the Salvation Army center. The day of service “opened my eyes to the needs around me,” said sophomore Meaghan Fox of Columbia, who volunteered at the Generous Garden Project, which provides food to the homeless and underprivileged.

 

Carrol Caldwell, pastor of Padgett’s Creek Baptist Church in Union, recently received a Lifetime Achievement Award from the South Carolina Baptist Convention for his 53 years of service in pastoral ministry. In addition to Padgett’s Creek, Caldwell has served Harmony Baptist in Fountain Inn, and Cavins Baptist in Woodruff.

 

Laurens Baptist Association WMU met at First Baptist Church Laurens on March 25.?Special guests were Girls in Action and their leaders from First Baptist Church, Clinton.?The GAs gave a snapshot of the work they were doing and the scope of their involvement in missions.?All current and former GAs were recognized during the program.?Pictured (standing, center) are the oldest GA, Lois Bowers, 88, an active member of the Women on Mission at Lucas Avenue Baptist Church, Laurens; and the youngest GA, Alden Coats, 7, daughter of Michael and Erica Coats of Clinton.

 

Columbia Baptist Church, Honea Path, celebrated its 197th homecoming on Oct. 14. Mark Chapman brought the message, and The Cornerstones and Highest Praise provided special music for the event.

 

Pleasant Meadow Baptist Church Loris, recently hosted its community’s annual Easter sunrise service.? Participating churches included Green Sea Baptist and Mt. Olive Baptist. Larry Jennings, who was recently called as pastor of Mt. Olive, delivered the message.

Susan Conner was baptized March 17 at Wren Baptist Church, Piedmont. Harold Sanders, pictured, is pastor.

Last year the Brotherhood of Ben Avon Baptist Church, Spartanburg, raised several thousand dollars through successful fundraisers such as car washes. Pictured are the men with their new “Spirit of Ben Avon” T-shirts, which will be utilized during this year’s fundraisers to upgrade church facilities.
