Be Guided by God’s Word

2 Timothy 3:1-17

Isaac Newton said that, if all the great books of human history could come to life and be gathered in a convention hall, when the Bible walked in the other books would all fall on their faces in reverence. We Baptists have a great reverence for the Bible because it “is a perfect treasure of divine instruction” and is therefore a sure guide for us all. Paul is going to remind his young assistant of the great value of God’s Word, but first he must address the situation that Timothy faces in Ephesus.

Know what to avoid (3:1-5). “Last days” refers to the entire time from the completion of Christ’s redemptive work until He returns. The apostle Paul described for Timothy the downward slide of society that will proceed with worsening effects during this time period. Sadly, some people within the church claim a relationship with Christ, but are more like the world than like Him. Because of their corrupting influence, believers must avoid continual fellowship with such people.

Distinguish truth from lies (3:6-9). Paul looked to the past as well as to the present to cite examples of persons who resist the truth. Jannes and Jambres do not appear in the Old Testament record by name, but were familiar in Jewish tradition as the sorcerers used by Egypt’s Pharaoh to oppose God’s authority through Moses (Exodus 7:11-12). Paul informs Timothy that eventually all false teachers and their lies will be exposed for what they are. The truth of God’s Word will always win out!

Be prepared for persecution (3:10-13). Timothy knew of the sacrifice involved in standing for truth, because he had witnessed the persecution experienced by his mentor. He, too, had experienced persecution to some degree. Paul makes it clear that all faithful believers will face persecution at some point in their lives. Our Lord spoke these reassuring words regarding the future of those persecuted for His sake: “Be glad and rejoice, because your reward is great in heaven” (Matthew 5:12).

Be equipped for right living (3:14-17). Paul uses an important word in verse 16 to stress the great value of God’s Word. “Profitable” means to be useful or beneficial. This important passage affirms at least three valuable benefits that come from the Scriptures. The Bible tells us how to enter into a saving relationship with God through Jesus Christ (vv. 14-15). It guides us in spiritual growth toward Christlikeness (v. 16). And God’s Word provides us with what we need for effective Christian service (v. 17).

Have you discovered the great profit found in the Bible? If you have, you can testify with David, who said, “More to be desired are they than gold, Yea, than much fine gold – . And in keeping them there is great reward” (Psalm 19:10-11).
