Associational teams ‘investigate’ VBS 2014

Associational teams from around the state gathered for the South Carolina Baptist Convention’s state Vacation Bible School clinic at Spring Valley Baptist Church on Feb. 15 to begin “investigating” this year’s theme. The clinic focused on preparing leaders to use LifeWay’s 2014 VBS materials, “Agency D3: Discover, Decide, Defend,” based on an investigative agency theme.

Among those attending the state VBS clinic were Bob White, VBS director for Santee Baptist Association, along with team members Shirley Stepp and Sherry Beaman from Shaw Heights Baptist Church in Sumter.

“A lot of leaders are very excited about this extremely evangelistic VBS, and kids will be drawn in by the theme, which is sort of a hybrid of CSI and secret agents,” said Sue Harmon, associate director of the state convention’s childhood ministry group. “The Agency D3 Bible studies will lead people to discover who Jesus is, decide to believe in him, and be able to defend their faith.”

Leaders attending the clinic experienced worship in the “agency headquarters” and then attended classes for the specific part of VBS they will teach. The classes were led by experienced VBS trainers from around the state: Lynn Wells (preschool) of Shiloh Baptist Church, Aiken; Ben Furr (children) of Chesterfield Baptist Association; Steven Ruff (youth/adult) of Port Royal Baptist Church; Annie Ruth Yelton (missions) of Simpsonville First Baptist Church; Jeremy and Cindy Hansard (music) of Trinity Baptist Church, Cayce; Lisa Sherrill (crafts) of Taylors First Baptist Church; and Tommy Comer (administrative leadership) of Gaffney First Baptist Church.

Those who attended the state VBS clinic will teach in local clinics to be held in their associations in the coming months. To find a nearby clinic, visit www.scbaptist.org/vbs or contact your local Baptist association.
