Donnie Hamlin Hughes

Donnie Hamlin Hughes of Greer, wife of retired pastor and director of missions Wallace Hughes, died Aug. 22, 2008, following a four-year battle with cancer.

She was a native of Liberty. She and her husband were 1955 graduates of Liberty High School. After high school, she worked as office manager of Atlantic and Gulf States Insurance Company of Easley for four years. In 1957, she married Wallace while he was a student at Furman University.

In 1959, they moved to Fort Worth, Tex., and both enrolled as students at Southwestern Seminary. After one year, Donnie gave up the classroom to become director of the Oder Department of the library of the seminary. She continued in that role until she and her husband returned to South Carolina to begin serving churches throughout the state.

She spent the majority of her married years as a homemaker, but also worked as secretary and art assistant at Seven Oaks Elementary School in Columbia and as an administrative assistant in development at Connie Maxwell Children’s Home in Greenwood.

During the 20 years her husband served as a pastor and the 18 years he served as an associational director of missions, she served as a Sunday school teacher, choir member, WMU member and associational WMU director, and as an English-as-a-second-language teacher.

She enjoyed her flower garden, bird watching, reading, and traveling. She was a member of Abner Creek Baptist Church, Greer.

Survivors include her husband, two daughters and two grandchildren.
