Doctor’s Creek Baptist Church in Walterboro will observe its 175th anniversary on Oct. 21.
Guest speaker will be Jim Austin, executive director-treasurer of the South Carolina Baptist Convention. Bible study begins at 9:45 a.m., followed by worship at 11 and an old-fashioned meal.
The church was organized in a one-room log building on Aug. 20, 1837, with a Rev. Wilson as pastor. In 1839 a one-room fame building was constructed. In 1917 the building was torn down, and some of the materials were used to build the present sanctuary.
An education building was built in 1954, and a social hall was constructed in 1974. Subsequent renovations included bricking all the buildings and the addition of stained-glass windows.
Doctor’s Creek Church has had 35 pastors in its history. Ken Jernigan has served as pastor since October 2011.
