Letter: SCBC should ‘stand strongly against’ Noble’s teachings

I have been following the controversy regarding Mr. Perry Noble of NewSpring Church, most recently related to his reinterpretation of the Ten Commandments. I have also read South Carolina Baptist Convention president Tommy Kelly’s gently worded letter reminding all ministers to regard their ministries as sacred trusts and their testimonies for Him as His called servants.

At best, Mr. Noble’s lack of research about the Commandments is lamentable, but in combination with his other teachings, deviates significantly from basic biblical content. Therefore, the South Carolina Baptist Convention must stand strongly against them, since thousands of people each week are influenced by this man.

Sound preaching and teaching of God’s Word is vital for the coming to salvation of all who are lost and for the continued growth of those who have accepted Jesus as Savior. Mr. Kelly should not — and should not be asked — to rescind or in any way compromise the contents of his letter to Mr. Noble, and, indeed, God’s complete, inerrant Word.

We must, as Mr. Kelly states, “publicly state and remove ourselves from these positions and problematic statements and call for NewSpring to correct these positions if it chooses to say that it affiliates with South Carolina Baptist churches.” Otherwise, the Convention has strayed from its primary task: “one sacred effort, … the propagation of the Gospel.”
