We are all another year older, but are we another year wiser? Resolutions have been made by many, and most will fall by the wayside by spring. It is always good to count our blessings and then praise the One who has blessed us.

God is faithful to His people, even when we have been unfaithful. Confidence in the God of scripture is a great way to start the new year and live every day.

I am not musically inclined. It has been a joke with my family throughout the years. Well, this coming year, I am going to take up the soprano saxophone. This is something new for me. Nobody believes I will do it, or that I can do it – but, by the grace of God, I am determined to learn to play it.

Since I got one as a Christmas gift and invested some money in instruction and music, I feel I must be a good steward now. In fact, I have already promised people that next Christmas I will play some Christmas music for them.

My commitment to learn the saxophone is a simple one. It will require work, study, and practice, but most of all it will require “stickability. Our commitment to Christ is much more significant and important, but that commitment requires the same “stickability” or faithfulness (Luke 9:62).

What does this new year hold for you? Whatever we may face, we can know for sure that we will not face it alone. The will of God will not take us where the grace of God will not keep us. Whatever He calls us to enjoy, endure, or do, we can do it.

The key for our new year is not simply our commitment, but our commitment to God. It is “keeping on keeping on” (or persevering) in His grace.

What is your plan or goal for this year? I plan to seek first God’s kingdom and learn to play the saxophone.

Recently, I was alone with my wife and daughters. I made the comment that there was some musical talent in the room. My wife simply looked at my daughters and suggested they did have some musical talent and implied that I might be lacking in that department. At any rate, may God richly bless us all as we seek to glorify Him and enjoy the life He gives us to live. Happy and blessed New Year. By the way, try something new this year. You won’t be the only one.
