Please do not count me in with those who were surprised about the “war on Christmas” that is going on all around. Don’t get me wrong; I’m not happy about it, just not surprised.
The war on Christmas began 2,000 years ago when Jesus was born. A group of Magi from the East came to Jerusalem looking for the child who was born “King of the Jews.” They came to worship the Christ.
But worship wasn’t the response of everyone. Herod, the king of the Palestine region at that time, declared war on the Christ, and in doing so began the war on Christmas. The war on Christmas continues today and will continue until the return of our Lord Jesus, when he will put all things under his feet.
The war on Christmas does not surprise me because Jesus said Himself that the world (all those apart from faith in Jesus) opposes Him. In fact, he says that the world “hates” Him, and all those who follow Him as well (John 7:7, 15:18-25).
What is shocking to me is the war on Christmas rages in the homes of so many Christians. This year, just like in years gone by, Jesus took a back seat to Santa, to presents, to family, to food, and to football. Today there is very little difference between how Christians celebrate Christmas and how our non-Christian neighbors celebrate Christmas.
We should make Jesus the real priority in our homes. Let’s humble ourselves and pray that we might live lives worthy of the calling of the King. Let’s do as he commands and seek first his kingdom and his righteousness.
