Balance provided

The Baptist Courier

Thank you for providing two articles in this month’s Baptist Courier on the IMB’s recent decision concerning prayer languages/tongues and our missionaries.

I was so grieved last month that Southern Baptists would alienate Christian brothers and sisters from traditions where tongues are accepted.

Hearing the objective and moderate views of Don Kirkland and James Goudelock gave me encouragement. This is important dialogue that will hopefully continue.

I don’t believe that our Lord is asking Southern Baptists to convert to speaking in tongues or searching for a private prayer language. By the same token, there is enough scriptural support for this mysterious (and yes, controversial) spiritual gift that we should be very slow to alienate any Christian brothers or sisters who accept or practice it.

Our world will not be won to Christ by a church or denomination that has allowed secondary issues to override the central core matters of our faith.

Thank you for providing us with some much-needed balance.
