Laura Beth Lewis, Horace Sims Award winner, and Don Kirkland, editor of The Baptist Courier.Laura Beth Lewis, a senior from Rocky Mount, N.C., has received the eighth annual Horace B. Sims Jr. Award for excellence in Christian Studies at North Greenville University.
The award was presented by Courier editor and president Don Kirkland at North Greenville’s annual awards day ceremonies in Turner Chapel. The award, which includes a cash gift, honors the memory of the late pastor, South Carolina Baptist Convention president and parliamentarian, and popular columnist for The Baptist Courier.
Lewis majored in intercultural studies with an emphasis on missions. In the fall, she will enroll at Southeastern Baptist Seminary in Wake Forest, N.C. She plans to work with underprivileged and abused children, possibly in a missions setting.
“Horace Sims was a lifelong advocate of Christian education, and he had especially close ties to North Greenville University, which awarded him an honorary doctorate,” said Kirkland. “The Courier is honored to help these students in his name.”
