McElrath retires after 55 years of ministry

Hiram McElrath has retired from the ministry after 55 years of service.

A graduate of North Greenville College, Furman University, and New Orleans Baptist Seminary, he has been pastor of five churches: Sunset Baptist Church, Sunset, La.; Warrior Creek Baptist, Laurens Association; Leesville Baptist, Ridge Association; Hemingway First Baptist, Williamsburg Association; and Harleyville First Baptist, Screven Association.

In 1989, while at Harleyville, he retired as a full-time pastor, but continued to serve as interim for five churches.

In 2000, he became associate pastor of First Baptist Church, Georgetown, where he served until April 23, when he was named associate pastor emeritus by the church.

McElrath also served as a trustee of the Baptist Hospital in Columbia and on the Nominating Committee of the South Carolina Baptist Convention.

He and his wife Jean live in Hemingway.
