An Encouraging Word – by Don Wilton

The Baptist Courier

All around the world, people just like us gather in the name of the Lord Jesus Christ. So think about this for a moment. At this very time, there are people, some of whom may well speak another language, who are interceding on your behalf and mine. Such is the power and privilege of intercessory prayer. And such is the wonderful joy of being one in the body of Christ!

I do want to encourage all of us to be much in prayer for two very specific things today. The first relates to the calling of God’s man to serve as our leader in South Carolina. Carlisle Driggers’ shoes are going to be hard to fill, but our Savior has already selected His choice.

I am certain Tim Williams and the team are working very hard on their assignment. I have every confidence in them as they represent all South Carolina Baptists. Perhaps you might consider simply writing a note to Tim, assuring him of your prayers. You may even want to ask your church to write notes to the committee in this regard. I am certain it will be an immense encouragement to them.

Then make yourself a permanent note to pray for Frank Page as he heads our entire Southern Baptist Convention. Write a note of encouragement to him as well, and pray for his wonderful church as they support him throughout this massive effort of ministry. I can’t imagine how many trips to Nashville he must have already taken. Pray the Lord would give him wisdom beyond himself and that every step he takes would be under the power and inspiration of our Savior.

As I was preaching from 2 Chronicles 7 on July 2, I was reminded of the four things God requires of His people. It may surprise you to discover that God does not require our money or missions, or preaching, or singing. These things are certainly good. What He does require are humility, prayer, a longing heart, and repentance. These are the things that get our Savior’s attention. This is the means by which we guarantee an overflow of His blessings on us.

No wonder we have such wonderful good news to give away!
