How I wish that all South Carolina Baptists could have been present at our state meeting after Dr. Frank Page was elected president of our national convention. As many South Carolina Baptists gathered in Greensboro, hearing from our new SBC president-elect and our state president Don Wilton, Mike Hamlet and others, I observed many former presidents of our state convention, Pastor’s Conference, leaders and members from both large and small churches, and I witnessed a unity of spirit. It was a beautiful sight.
I am sure that not everyone had voted for Frank Page, nor did everyone agree on all issues within our convention. Certainly not everyone gave the same amount to the Cooperative Program. Some gave large amounts, some gave small amounts. Some were members of large churches. Some were members of smaller, and perhaps struggling, churches. But there they were – the body of Christ in unity, in love, caring for one another in the bond of peace. What joy! What love!
I pray that all South Carolina Baptists will love one another, care for one another and edify one another. Let us not major on those things that would divide us, but rather, let us major on those things that build up the body of Christ. “Love one another for God is love” (1 John 4:7).
