Mike Moody, pastor of First Baptist Church, Honea Path, was elected president of the South Carolina Baptist Convention during the Nov. 15 session of its 186th annual meeting in Taylors.

Moody received 550 votes, or 67 percent of the votes cast, while Tom Tucker, pastor of Calvary Baptist Church, Rock Hill, received 271 votes, or 33 percent. Moody was nominated by Von Reynolds, pastor, Seneca Baptist Church, Seneca, and Tucker was nominated by Randall Jones, retired pastor of Langston Baptist Church, Conway.
Total messenger registration on Wednesday tallied 1,444 – 169 more than last year.
In nominating Moody, Reynolds said Moody was well qualified to serve as president.
“But there is something that stands out about Mike Moody,” said Reynolds, “and that’s his loyal and unswerving support for the Cooperative Program.”
Reynolds said the election of Frank Page as president of the Southern Baptist Convention in June was “an affirmation of our support for the Cooperative Program,” and added that “we need a leader who will carry the banner for the Cooperative Program.”

Moody is completing a term as chairman of the Budget, Finance and Audit Committee of the state convention’s Executive Board.
Moody, a Greenville native, graduated from North Greenville and Carson-Newman colleges and Southwestern Baptist Seminary. Since graduating from Southwestern, he has held five South Carolina pastorates – Crossroads in Seneca; Cedar Grove in Belton; Tabernacle in Union; City View First Baptist in Greenville; and First Baptist in Honea Path since 1999. He also has served on the Nominations Committee of the state convention and has held associational positions, including moderator. He and his wife Billie have two sons, Josh and Adam.
South Carolina Baptist Convention presidents are elected for one year and are not eligible for a second term until a year has lapsed.
The convention president takes office when the annual meeting adjourns.
Serving with Moody will be Fred Stone, First Baptist Church, Pickens, first vice president; Adrian Allen, Union Baptist Church, Pamplico, second vice president; Linda Hite, ministry assistant, Lexington Baptist Association and member of Red Bank Baptist Church, recording secretary; and Bill Lutz, Holmes Avenue Baptist Church, North Charleston, registration secretary. All officers, other than president, were elected by acclamation.
