Northwood Baptist Church presented “Impact Your World” award

Northwood Baptist Church, North Charleston, was presented the 2006 “Impact Your World” award at the annual meeting of the South Carolina Baptist Convention at Taylors First Baptist Church.

Sonny Holmes is pastor of Northwood.

A group called Christians in Action comprises Northwood’s leaders on social and moral issues. The team equips the church to engage today’s culture. The group serves to move church members toward a fuller expression of their Christian faith in the public square.

During the year, Christians in Action conducted the following activities:

? A graveyard display to focus on the unborn and a baby bottle fundraiser for a local crisis pregnancy center

? Collected Bibles for persecuted Christians

? Held voter registration and provided non-partisan voter guides

? Provided “In God We Trust” and Pledge of Allegiance posters for school rooms

? Opposed before city council both riverboat gambling and a proposed gay fitness center

? Provided a recommended movie list

? Promoted Skyangel satellite Christian programming

? Hosted “Voice of the Martyrs” missionaries

? Introduced Heritage Builders family nights

? Hosted “Engaging Your Culture: A Conference on the Christian Worldview” (a 5-day conference with renowned speakers)

? Presented courses on Christian Worldview, America’s Spiritual Heritage and the U.S. constitution

? Promoted “Covenant Eyes,” a deterrent to viewing internet pornography

? Provided gambling education materials

? Encouraged members to contact legislators on key issues

? Referred congregation to Christian Web sites for current news items

? Trained other churches in developing a Christians in Action team

? Hosted a National Day of Prayer event

? Provided information regarding education choices

? Maintained center to inform members about social and political issues

? Linked church Web site to Christian organizations and ministries
