White Plains Baptist Church, Gaffney, burned the mortgage on its family life center during homecoming Sept. 24. The facility was completed and dedicated in June 2001. Bethel Baptist Church, Monetta, recognized several members of the McCarty family for perfect attendance during its promotion Sunday earlier this fall. From left are (front row) Donald, a former deacon and teacher of the Sunshine Men’s Bible Class for almost 20 years, who received a 16-year pin; Heyward, also a former deacon and Sunday school teacher, three-year pin; and Jacob Jr., one-year pin. Ted and Tammy Keller were recognized as Mission Service Corps Missionaries of the Year for South Carolina. They were given a plaque by Bill Dieckman, left, director of missions for Columbia Metro Baptist Association, during the association’s annual meeting at North Point Community Church. MSC volunteers are appointed by the North American Mission Board for four months to two years. The Kellers, who serve as chaplains to people in the trucking industry, have a chapel at the Flying J truck stop on I-20.

“Miss Polly” Martin, a lifelong member of Nebo Baptist Church, Britton’s Neck, received a visit from the youth group of the church while she was recuperating at home following knee-replacement surgery. Don Collins was recently honored for 43 years of service as treasurer by Catawba Baptist Church, Rock Hill. With him is his wife Jeanette.

Dendall Cothran, left, was recently named honorary lifetime deacon by Cedar Shoals Baptist Church, Belton. Cothran has been a member of Cedar Shoals since 1948 and was first appointed as a deacon in 1979. He has held numerous positions in the church, including Sunday school teacher and assistant Sunday school director. He has served on the pulpit committee and currently is president of the church’s trustees. With Cothran is pastor Frank Dooley, who presented a plaque of recognition on behalf of the church.

In partnership with Jeremiah Missionary Baptist Church, 11 members of River Road Baptist Church, Piedmont, traveled to Jeremiah, Ky., Sept. 13-17, where they helped a family install windows and secure the foundation of their home. At the request of pastor Allen Meyers and his wife Ruby, the group also led in the formation of a new women’s ministry and Bible study group at Jeremiah. Members of River Road sent new coats for the needy children in the Jeremiah area. Money raised for the coats began with the children of River Road as their “Avalanche of Aid” mission action project from Vacation Bible School. The “Children in Action” of River Road also sent school supplies collected during their “Christmas in August” project.

To promote Operation Christmas Child (a program sponsored by Samaritan’s Purse), 23 children in grades 1-6 from Bethlehem Baptist Church, Conway, performed the musical based on the project. Each class was challenged to bring the most supplies and shoeboxes as part of a churchwide collection effort. Each Sunday in October during “Children’s Corner,” a story from the Operation Christmas Child Magazine was used. At the end of the children’s program, a special love offering was taken, and the congregation gathered again the following week to pack the boxes and have a special time of prayer. A total of 115 boxes were collected.

Mary Ellen Padgett was honored on her 90th birthday Aug. 26 by Spring Branch Baptist Church, Bamberg, where she served for 70-plus years as church pianist. She has also been secretary and treasurer for the Women on Missions group for more than 50 years.

Memorial Baptist Church, Aiken, recently celebrated its 54th homecoming. Members dressed in the attire of the 1950s and 1960s, and several brought their vintage automobiles to the church parking lot to commemorate that era during which the church experienced rapid growth. Jim Kirk is pastor of Memorial, which began as a mission church of First Baptist Church, Aiken.

Former pastors Troy Gregg, Gene Boone, Milton Parker and Fred Astin attended the 40th anniversary of Old Fort Baptist Church, Summerville, Sept. 24. With them is pastor Eric Lethco.

Langston Baptist Church, Conway, presented Judgement House Oct. 29-Nov. 5. Grant Hucks, a member of Langston, portrayed Jesus in the drama. Directed by Joseph Skipper, also a member at Langston, the drama was originally scheduled to run for four nights, but an encore performance was scheduled for a fifth night due to the great demand. Langston’s pastor, Barry Crocker, reports that 2,552 people attended the drama and more than 339 people made professions of faith.

Fran Langley was honored Oct. 1 by North Hartsville Baptist Church, Welsh Neck Baptist Association. She has served as church pianist for more than 25 years. A plaque was given, along with a love offering from the church. With Langley are pastor Ladell Humphries, left, and deacon chairman Eddie Beck.
