
Members of “Sewing for Missions” of First Baptist Church, St. Matthews, are shown bagging some of the 257 caps made for seafarers who dock in Charleston. Last year, they also made 88 caps for children in Paytona, W.Va.; 251 personal hygiene bags for seafarers; 250 medicine bags for a medical team in South America; and 50 turbans for cancer patients in Orangeburg.

Charter members of West Gantt First Baptist Church, Greenville, were recognized on Family Day, Nov. 19. The first sermon was preached in the church on April 1, 1946, with 115 people in attendance and an offering of $283. Earle Murdock recently celebrated his 100th birthday at the Due West Retirement Center in Due West. He has been a member of First Baptist Church, Abbeville, since 1951. He is the brother of the late John Murdock, former administrator at Connie Maxwell Children’s Home.

Andrew Winburn, second from right, was ordained to the ministry Nov. 5 by Spring Valley Baptist Church, Columbia. Participating in the service were Jay Hardwick, lead pastor of Catalyst Church, Greenville, and brother-in-law of Andrew Winburn; Robert Winburn, pastor of Spring Valley Baptist and father of the candidate; and John Platt, interim minister of education at Spring Valley. Andrew Winburn earned a master of divinity degree from Southeastern Baptist Seminary and is currently pursuing a doctor of education degree there. He is associate pastor at Eastwood Baptist Church, Columbia.

Union Baptist Church, Lancaster, held pastor appreciation day for pastor Jackie Jenkins Jan. 7. Jack Carnes, chairman of deacons, presented Jenkins and his wife a card and monetary gift on behalf of the church.

Last July, Sharon and Dean Fox moved into the home which was built for them by ministers from Orangeburg-Calhoun Association. Fox, former pastor of Bowman First Baptist Church for 11 years, was diagnosed with lung cancer in late 2005. He died Jan. 3 of this year. Sharon Fox expresses her gratitude to all who prayed for them and who contributed to and helped in the construction efforts.

Red Path Baptist Church, Rock Hill, recently gave a van to Black River Native American Church, Orangeburg-Calhoun Association. The van was originally given to the Red Path congregation five years ago by Tega Cay Baptist Church, Fort Mill. Each light bulb represents $25, displaying the church’s goal of $1,200. The goal was exceeded by more than $800, for a total of $2,070.

The members of Evergreen Baptist Church, Effingham, celebrated the New Year Jan. 6 with their 40th annual New Year’s Barbecue at the family life center. The men of the church spent all day cooking a 150-pound hog, while the women provided the side dishes and desserts.

When the Senior Sunday School Class of Friendship Baptist Church, Gray Court, held its Christmas party, the group also honored longtime member Linda Fay Bobo by renaming the class in her honor. Bobo was also given a silver bowl in appreciation for more than 50 years of service to the church. Several class members spoke of how Bobo had served as a role model to them in both school and church. With Bobo is Henry Rogers, who was her pastor for 28 years.
