Hold to the course

The Baptist Courier

I would like to respond to the letter from Ann Kelly in the Feb. 22, 2007 edition of The Baptist Courier.

I would simply ask Mrs. Kelly if her opinion is formed from society and what it tells us is proper for the church? Or is her opinion formed and guided by scripture? I can find no scripture that says it is proper for a woman to teach a man in the church, but to the contrary, I do find verses that prohibit women from teaching men in the church (1 Timothy 2:12).

Why is this so upsetting to the church today? The church, for too long, has been letting society and popular opinion win out over the word of God. We are his children, bought with the blood of his own Son. Should God not give instruction for what is proper in the church?

I am thankful that scripture has been reverenced by men and women in places of leadership in the Southern Baptist Convention. It is my hope that Southern Baptists will hold fast to this course and let the Bible guide all that we do.
