Herb Griffin, director of the South Carolina Baptist Convention accounting group, was recently presented the highest award given to a Southern Baptist business officer in church, benevolent institution, agency, convention or foundation work.

In presenting the award earlier this month, James Wright, SCBC associate executive director and chief financial officer, highlighted not only Griffin’s work but also his character.
“He is a humble, faithful servant of God. He is the kind of person who works behind the scenes to get things done and does not seek recognition for the work he does each and every day,” said Wright.
Bill Collins, director of the SCBC business management team, described Griffin’s work and character over the past 36 years as an “example of excellent customer service” and leads with a “servant’s heart.”
Griffin began his work with the convention in April 1971. Yearly, Griffin handles nearly $50 million in church gifts from over 2,000 churches in South Carolina. Griffin has successfully led the state convention through countless changes in accounting systems.
“Churches have a great sense of trust that all gifts are handled in the proper way with Herb leading in our state,” said Wright.
Nominations for the Taylor Daniel Award are received from Baptist churches and institutions, and the recipient is chosen by the officers of the Southern Baptist Officers Conference.
Carlisle Driggers, executive-director treasurer emeritus, lauded Griffin’s relationship with the convention staff.
“His co-workers throughout our entire organization simply adore him with trust, respect and appreciation,” Driggers said.
By all accounts, this award was fitting for Griffin’s service.
“The Taylor Daniel Award is a well-deserved acknowledgment of Herb’s tremendous contribution to the accounting operations of the South Carolina Baptist Convention,” Wright said.
