A motion adopting a statement related to the Baptist Faith & Message 2000 has passed, 57.55 percent (2,137 votes) to 42.15 percent (1,565 votes). There were 11 disallowed ballots.
With passage of the motion, the convention adopts the following statement: “The Baptist Faith and Message is not a creed, or a complete statement of our faith, nor final or infallible, nevertheless we further acknowledge that it is the only consensus statement of doctrinal beliefs approved by the Southern Baptist Convention and as such is sufficient in its current form to guide trustees in their establishment of policies and practices of entities of the Convention.”
Rick Garner of Ohio made the motion to adopt the statement, which originally was adopted by the Executive Committee in February under an SBC bylaw requiring that the convention’s entities respond to motions referred to them from the preceding SBC annual meeting.
