Brad Thompson was licensed to the ministry May 20 by Jonesville Baptist Church, Union County Baptist Association. Thompson will be serving Padgetts Creek Baptist Church, Union, as part-time minister of youth. Mike and Gail Hammond, Buford and Vivian Hayes, and Robert Broughton help give out lap throws to residents at Lancaster Convalescent Center and White Oak Manor. Crissy Searles, who works at the center, and Betty McDonald also assisted. The throws were made by Sybil Black, Josephine Broughton, Nancy Drawdy, and Hallie Hammond, members of Jones Crossroads Baptist Church, Lancaster, where Hammond serves as pastor.

 

 

The youth of Evergreen Baptist Church, Effingham, have been busy raising funds for their summer mission trip to Copperhill, Tenn. They had an indoor yard sale May 5 and held a car wash May 12. Chris Owens and Damon Earp took their turns holding signs promoting the car wash. Tina Suggs and Sherri Owens are youth directors for Evergreen.

 

 

The RAs and GAs of Woodward Baptist Church, Chester, held a spaghetti supper that raised more than $1,000 for the boys and girls to attend camp this summer. Mike Shaffer provided entertainment with his impression of Jerry Clower. Cecil Johnson serves as interim pastor.

 

 

GAs from Spring Valley Baptist Church, Columbia, participated in a sleepover at the church with the theme “GAs are Girls of Beauty.” The sleepover included lessons on being a girl of beauty spiritually, physically, and socially. Also featured was a demonstration by Mike Genova on “Stranger Danger,” a “Body and Soul” exercise class, and the first annual pajama fashion show.

 

 

Dedication for the new seafarers center in Charleston was held May 22. A house that was part of the transfer of property when the Charleston Baptist Association moved its offices was remodeled to be used as the center. It will serve crew members from ships docking at ports on the Cooper River in Charleston and North Charleston. Holding a picture that was a gift from the South Carolina Baptist Convention are (l to r) DOM Edgar Boles, port chaplain Chris Dale, special ministries coordinator Gary Mathis, SCBC mobilization strategist Tim Rice, and port chaplain Youngki Kim.

 

 

Magdalene Smoak was honored last December by Mt. Tabor Baptist Church, Bowman, for 57 years of service as a Sunday school teacher. Presenting a plaque of recognition is Raymond Dukes, Sunday school director. Smoak has now entered a new ministry in her life: sharing the gospel in song.

 

 

Welsh Neck Baptist Association recently held an R.A. Derby at Kelleytown Baptist Church. Overall winners of the event were Joshua Burr, Jacob Burr and Allen Johnson. David Dinkins is director of missions.

 

 

Hillcrest Baptist Church, Laurens, recently held an appreciation day for Elizabeth “Liz” Corley. Corley organizes Vacation Bible School each year and works every Sunday with the children’s ministry team. She also sets up other youth and children’s activities throughout the year. A plaque honoring her will be hung in the children’s department.

 

 

First Baptist Church, Landrum, recently recognized and presented certificates to 24 couples in the church who have been married 50 years or longer. The couples ranged from 50 to 69 years of marriage. Some couples are in assisted living facilities, and others are confined to the home and were not able to attend.
