Aug. 21 marked the first day of classes at Charleston Southern University, and the official enrollment numbers have been tallied.

Nancy Pierce, daughter Ashelynn Pierce, Jairy Hunter, CSU trustee Rob Pierce, and daughter Anna Pierce, an incoming CSU freshman, enjoy refreshments at the President’s Luau welcoming freshmen and their families.

Total enrollment is 3,286 students, a record-breaking number for CSU. There are 2,834 undergraduate and 452 graduate students. Full-time students total 2,398, and 888 students attend part-time.

A waiting list was implemented for the first time in the history of the university. According to vice president for enrollment management Debbie Williamson, approximately 200 students were encouraged to reapply for the spring semester.

The theme for this year is “Let’s Roar.” Incoming freshmen for Charleston Southern’s fall 2007 semester were asked to read “Roaring Lambs” by Bob Briner prior to the first day of school.

This was the first time that Charleston Southern students were required to complete a summer reading assignment prior to arrival at the university. Discussions about the theme have been incorporated into freshman orientation, freshman seminar and additional small group discussions.
