In the November issue of Charleston Magazine, the late John Hamrick, former pastor and founding president of Charleston Southern University, was named as one of “Charleston’s 100 most influential people who have set our course since 1670,” when the city was founded.
The article cites Hamrick among longtime residents “who have influenced the place physically, politically, and spiritually and who have made this locale legendary.”
Hamrick was pastor of First Baptist Church, Charleston, from 1940-1969. He led CSU, which was founded as Baptist College at Charleston, from 1964-1983.
