Martha Leathers Wennerberg

Martha Leathers Wennerberg of DeFuniak Springs, Fla., a South Carolina native who held both state and national WMU offices, died March 5, 2008, after a long battle with breast cancer.

She was active in the work of the Florida Baptist Convention, was Florida’s state WMU president, and served on various boards of trustees. She was recording secretary for national WMU and, at her death, was serving on the WMU Foundation board of trustees.

She was baptized at age 12 at First Baptist Church in Pelzer. She was employed as a legal secretary while earning her bachelor of arts degree from Furman University in 1957. She earned her master’s degree in religious education from Southwestern Baptist Seminary in 1959.

Wennerberg served as youth director at Congress Heights Baptist Church, Washington, D.C., and at First Baptist Church in Montgomery, Ala. She also served as the state Young Woman’s Auxiliary director with the Alabama Woman’s Missionary Union.

Survivors include her husband, Don Wennerberg, two daughters and two grandchildren.
