Seventeen Charleston Southern University students spent two Saturdays in February working at a Habitat for Humanity construction site in Jedburg. Their goal: to complete the porch on a 23,000-foot ReStore facility. The building will serve as a collection site for donated items, the sale of which will provide money for Habitat home building supplies. Mount Arnon Baptist Church, Allendale, recently held groundbreaking for a fellowship/multi-purpose building. Trustees and building committee members who participated include Rhonda Lawson, Deanie Hutto, W.J. Ryan, Guy Ferguson, Wayne Woods, pastor Mike Catoe, and Edgar Ferguson.

Harris Baptist Church, Greenwood, held a groundbreaking ceremony March 2 for a 15,000-square-foot building, which will house a fellowship hall with seating for 560, a large commercial-grade kitchen, church office complex, and other amenities. Members of the hostess and food services committees are pictured “breaking ground” with large serving spoons. Construction of the $2.3 million facility is expected to take one year.

 

 

Eastwood Baptist Church, Columbia, held a groundbreaking ceremony March 9 for a family life center. Dotsy Dixon, left, was recognized in February by Dunean Baptist Church, Greenville, for 40 years service as organist. Nancy Barnes, interim music director, presented a plaque of appreciation.

 

 

Chris Connelly has been ordained as deacon by Samaria Baptist Church, Batesburg. He and his wife Wendy have two children, Lauren and Rachel. With him is pastor Dennis Metts.

 

 

In recognition of WMU Focus Week, the mission groups at Crescent Hill Baptist Church held a brunch Feb. 16. There were 38 women in attendance. The four mission groups shared information about projects and how they were spreading the gospel. Group facilitators are Wilma Smith, morning Bible study; Betty Smith, afternoon Bible study; Iris House, Missions in Action; and Treasha Ellington, Women Serving Christ. Ellington serves as WMU director.

 

 

Fifty-two members of the Silvertones Senior Adult Choir of First Baptist Church, Camden, visited Martha Franks Retirement Community March 17. The choir members – ages 61-90 – enjoyed lunch in the dining hall, after which they presented a program of gospel music for the residents in the new chapel.

 

 

Jessie Roberts was honored March 16 by the WMU at First Baptist Church, Lockhart, as its oldest member. A lighted crown was placed on her head and a sash that read “WMU Queen for a Day” was draped around her. Roberts turned 90 March 19.
