Pastor Dennis Lynn and his wife Helen were honored Feb. 3 at First Baptist Church, McCormick, for “a decade of dedication and faithful service.” They were given a “book of memories” compiled by church members and friends, along with a trip to New York City and an eight-day Caribbean cruise. Berea First Baptist Church, Greenville,?burned the mortgage on its senior adult building and child development center Feb. 10. Participating in the ceremony are James McGee, left, finance committee chairman, and pastor Ronald Vaughan.?Berea First recently completed a $2 million renovation of its sanctuary and is building a welcome center and student ministry center.?

 

 

Members of Union Baptist Church, Elgin, participated in a groundbreaking for a new gymnasium Jan. 20. The 9,600-square-foot building will have a full-size basketball court, volleyball set-up, restrooms and equipment/seating storage. The project is expected to be completed in October 2008. During the ceremony, church members G.P. and Virginia Monroe were recognized for their support of the project. Participants included (l to r) pastor Jerry Lewis, deacons Walter Jackson, Chuck Johnson, Norman Ford, Stanley Rabon, and trustees G.P. Monroe Jr. and John “Buck” Martin.

Berlin Baptist Church, Salley, established five teams to participate in Souper Bowl Sunday outreach. Teams visited 56 homes and ministered to 20 unchurched families in the community, while other members stayed at the church to pray for the event. Mitchell McAbee was honored in February during Scout Sunday by Grace Baptist Church, Duncan. He is a Cub Scout in Roebuck.

 

 

Landon Reynolds, left, was licensed to the ministry Jan. 6 by Elim Baptist Church, Effingham. He will attend Southern Baptist Seminary in the fall. Reynolds is the son of Greg and Suzette Reynolds of Timmonsville. With Reynolds is pastor Ken Moore.

 

 

The congregation of Mt. Zion Baptist Church, Loris, held dedication for their new sanctuary March 2.

 

 

A ministry team from Charleston Southern University led a youth revival weekend at Evergreen Baptist Church, Effingham, Feb. 23-25. The church’s youth also participated in the Sunday morning service in which Andrew West shared a testimony about being a missionary kid in Latin America. Members of the CSU team included (l to r) West, Ashley Newell and Daniel Hutchinson. The team also led the youth in a Saturday program focusing on Christian life and persecution.

 

 

Miriam Myers was honored Jan. 13 by Scranton Baptist Church, Williamsburg Baptist Association, for 60 years of service as pianist and organist. The choir room was named in her honor, and a plaque was given to commemorate her years of service. Myers, 87, still serves as organist. With Myers is Carey McElveen, a former pastor of Scranton.

 

 

A group of residents from Perry Eldercare, a senior residential care facility, was honored Jan. 27 by Berlin Baptist Church, Salley. Part of Berlin’s mission for 2008 is to reach out more to the community. The seniors ministry of the church wanted to reach out to seniors who can no longer provide their own transportation. “I wanted our group to find a ministry focus this year,” said Barbara Poole, director of Berlin’s seniors ministry, “so I prayed for guidance, and the Lord put the residents of Perry Eldercare on my heart. After I visited the residents, they wanted to visit our church. After discussions with our minister, Brian Thomason, we decided to have a special day to honor the Perry Eldercare residents.”

 

 

First Baptist Church, Lamar, held a Forever Young Valentine luncheon Feb. 9. The king and queen were Larue and Christine Phillips.

 

 

The children of Rosemont Baptist Church, Waterloo, recently raised more than $300 for the Laurens County Crisis Center during a Valentine’s King and Queen contest. Vada Jennings was crowned queen, and Dawson Carruth was crowned king.

 

 

Teacher Nyla Richardson inspired the Children in Action group at Nebo Baptist Church, Gresham, to begin collecting “coins for Lottie.” Their collection totaled $431, which was added to other contributions from church members, helping Nebo reach its Lottie Moon goal.

 

 

The youth of Memorial Baptist Church held their sixth annual Connie Maxwell Children’s Home Valentine fund raiser. A total of $722 was collected. The 2008 Valentine king and queen were Chandler Hiers and Taylor Lyons.

 

 

Mechanicsville Baptist Church, Darlington, held baptismal services Feb. 24 for 12 new members. This is the second baptismal service since the beginning of the new year. Seven were baptized in January. Frankie Tanner is pastor of Mechanicsville.
