Edgar Carter Morgan, 94, of Seneca, a retired Southern Baptist missionary and an academic dean at a Baptist seminary in China, died April 5, 2008.
Carter MorganBorn in 1913 in Laichow, Shantung, China, to Southern Baptist missionaries, he grew up in Tsingtao, Shantung, China, and finished high school in Westminster. Morgan received master and doctor of divinity degrees from the Baptist Bible Institute, now New Orleans Baptist Seminary.
Prior to becoming a missionary, Morgan performed Bible conference and retreat work and children’s Christian camps from 1933 through 1947. He taught at William Jennings Bryan College in Dayton, Tenn., and Clear Creek Baptist School in Pineville, Ky.
He married Agnes Iola McMahan in 1947. The Morgans were appointed as Southern Baptist missionaries in 1948. He served as pastor and general evangelist in Waimea, Kauai, Hawaii, from 1948 to 1954 and as director of the student center in Honolulu from 1954 to 1955.
In 1955, the Morgans transferred to Hong Kong, where he served as academic dean of the Hong Kong Baptist Seminary from 1955 to 1979. He also served as dean of the Asia Baptist Graduate Seminary from 1966 to 1982. In 1979, the Morgans transferred to the Philippines, where he was a seminary teacher in Baguio City.
The Morgans retired in 1983 and moved to Westminster. He taught in a Bible study for students and families at the Chinese Christian Fellowship of Clemson. Between 1991 and 1996, the Morgans returned to Hong Kong for four years to teach at the Baptist seminary, returning to South Carolina in 1996.
Survivors include his wife and a son.
