A non-traditional student with her sights set on a career in marriage and family therapy has received the 10th anniversary Horace B. Sims Jr. Award for excellent achievement in the field of Christian studies at North Greenville University. Tammy Mosley was recognized during NGU’s annual awards day ceremonies on April 21.

The Greenville homemaker, who compiled a 4.0 grade point average in the university’s college of Christian studies, plans to earn a graduate degree from Converse College in Spartanburg. She and her husband Dwayne, who is the CEO for Asset Enterprises in Greenville, are parents of Zachary, 24, and Molly, 18. For the past 11 years, they have been members of Brookwood Community Church in Simpsonville.
The Sims award was established in 1999 to honor the late pastor, state Baptist convention president and parliamentarian, and columnist for The Baptist Courier, whose writings still appear in the Courier and are collected in a widely popular book, “Whistling at Snakes.”
The award was first presented on May 6 at North Greenville’s spring commencement. Sims, who was pastor of Abney Memorial Baptist Church in Greenwood and who had been scheduled to receive an honorary doctorate from the school and deliver the graduation address, died on March 18. His doctorate, awarded posthumously, was presented to his family.
A graduating senior is given the award each spring “in the assurance that it will honor Horace Sims and his Christ.”
