Monaghan Baptist holds mortgage-burning ceremony

The Baptist Courier

The history of Monaghan Baptist Church dates back more than 100 years and on Sunday, May 4, another chapter in Monaghan’s history book was completed.?A mortgage-burning service was held with the congregation witnessing as Barry Dilworth, pastor of Monaghan Baptist, and Robert Dale McKinney, chairman of finances, lit the mortgage over the wash pot that was once used to raise money to pay off the debt.

On Aug. 8, 1998, a clear, warm Saturday around noon, the sanctuary roof unexpectedly came crashing to the floor some 30 feet below. However, in less than 24 hours, worship services were held in the family life center.?

Building fund efforts continued, and plans were underway for a new, larger sanctuary to rise from the rubble.?Plans were for a seating capacity of 999 people.?

Members prayerfully watched as plans took shape.?Stained glass windows were returned, new pews were purchased, chandeliers were installed, and finally the grounds were landscaped.

Prior to the interior installation being completed, members were challenged to come in on Sunday afternoon and give glory to God by writing their favorite Bible verses or their favorite prayer on the plywood floor.

On Nov. 12, 2000, the current sanctuary was dedicated.?

The cost of the facility was more than $2 million, with approximately $800,000 paid by insurance proceeds. The remaining balance of $1.2 million was to be paid off in monthly installments.

With God’s help and members giving unselfishly, the debt was paid off in less than nine years.
