A scholarship in memory of a former member of First Baptist Church in Laurens has been established at Columbia International University.
Joseph DennieThe Joseph Dennie Memorial Scholarship honors a 2006 graduate of CIU who died in November at the age of 23 after suffering from muscular dystrophy and being confined to a wheelchair since he was 12 years old.
Dennie had been an active member of the Laurens church, where he taught Sunday school and had sung in the choir. An avid student of scripture, he was working on a book about the Bible at the time of his death.
Approximately 800 family and friends attended his funeral service, conducted by the pastor of First Baptist Church, Bev Kennedy. He was the son of Duane and Laura Outz Dennie of Laurens. He was engaged to Leanna Neelands of Newberry.
