Congaree Baptist ChurchCongaree Baptist Church, West Columbia, will celebrate its 100th anniversary Aug. 31.
Congaree began in 1908 with nine charter members in a brush arbor located on the top of the hill at the site of the current church cemetery. It was dubbed “The Old Church on the Hill.”

The first pastor was J.W. Peevy. Worship services were held once a month in the old one-room church, and Sunday school was held each Sunday.
The old structure was destroyed by fire in 1961 and a new sanctuary was completed in July 1962 at a new location on the corner of Congaree Drive and Pine Ridge Drive. Additional buildings have been added through the years.
