Wingate Bryant Spivey Sr., 86, of Columbia, a retired pastor, chaplain and former Baptist Student Union director at the University of South Carolina, died July 26, 2008.
Born in Lake View, he was a Navy veteran of World War II.
He attended Mars Hill College and graduated from Furman University and Duke Divinity School. He had further training with the South Carolina State Hospital Chaplaincy Program, summer institutes at Southern Seminary and the University of St. Andrews, Scotland.
He was ordained at Bear Swamp Baptist Church and served at Little Rock Baptist, Black Creek Baptist, Cameron Baptist and Concord Baptist churches. He also served as chaplain with the South Carolina Department of Mental Retardation at Midlands Center, Adult Prison System and with students at the Department of Youth Services.
In addition to serving as BSU director at USC, he later served as a chaplain to international students at the university. He also served as the assistant director of John de la Howe School in McCormick, and was a former moderator for Columbia Metro Baptist Association.
Survivors include his wife, Carol Moore Spivey, three children, five grandchildren and four great-grandchildren. He was predeceased by his first wife, Beth Martin Spivey.
