Capitol View – by Joe Mack

The Baptist Courier

As I was driving to work one morning, I heard the disc jockey laughing about the upcoming vote. He didn’t slant his view to one candidate or the other. He was just tired of hearing all the campaign rhetoric and wishing Election Day was over. I must admit, there are times when I tire of hearing promises of things a president cannot deliver without legislative agreement. As Christians, we must not give in to election fatigue.

Empty promises of pipe dreams bombard us every day in print, on radio, and on television. They come at us in the form of commercials and as front-page news.

Over and over we hear people say that this is the most important vote of our lifetime. Actually, every vote in which we participate is the most important vote of our lifetime. Every vote brings us one election closer to the Lord’s coming.

Christians must accept the responsibility to know the candidates’ positions on important issues. We must investigate their values through the lens of personal life choices and the votes they tendered as an elected official. We must connect the dots between what they say now and how those views will affect our future and our children’s futures.

Examining candidate’s views on life issues is crucial to the survival of any biblical principle in the public square.

Where does he stand on same-sex marriage or condemning freedom of speech as a hate crime? Does he have plans to further embryonic stem cell research or support assisted suicide? Where does he stand on abortion? How will these decisions impact his nominations to the Supreme Court? What can we expect from him on foreign policy? We need the answers to these and other questions to make an informed decision on Nov. 4.

Let me encourage you to stay alert, to not grow weary of campaign overload. I believe Satan uses the media to desensitize us from the undercurrent of perversion in today’s culture and to distract us from truth.

As I write this article, I am drawn to 1 Peter 5: 8-10, especially verse 10: “And the God of all grace, who called you to his eternal glory in Christ, after you have suffered a little while, will himself restore you and make you strong, firm and steadfast.” Suffer through the remaining weeks of the campaign, but make your decision based on facts, not empty promises.

You are important and your vote is vital. Please encourage everyone you know to vote this year.
