First Baptist Church, Norris, celebrated its 100th anniversary Sept. 7. After a year of planning and preparation that included everything from commemorative plates, fans and Christmas ornaments to a detailed cleaning of the facilities, approximately 300 people attended the celebration, including former pastors, ministers of music and former members.

During the 10 a.m. service, a history of the church was presented by eight narrators with a selection of hymns led by former ministers of music. Pictures from the past were shared with the congregation on a large screen.
The original church bell that is on display in the front of the church was rung as in days past.
A historical presentation included all phases of the church’s missions work. There have been 20 mission trips assigned by the North American Mission Board in 10 states since 1981. The church has built seven churches in Mexico with a vision for three more. Along with area churches, First Baptist has sponsored seven annual Norris Fests for the community.
In 1998, the church adopted a master plan for a phased building program, and in 2002 the first phase was completed with an expansion of the fellowship building. The historical presentation ended with a look to the future and the second phase, which will be the construction of a multi-purpose building.
During the 11 a.m. service, Jim Austin, executive director-treasurer of the South Carolina Baptist Convention, was keynote speaker.
After the services, Royce Addis, who has been pastor for 17 years, led a site dedication for the multi-purpose building.
