Pleasant Grove Baptist Church, Greer

Pleasant Grove Baptist Church in Greer will commemorate its 175th anniversary on Oct. 19. “Celebrating God’s Faithfulness” will be the theme of the observance.

Cleatus Blackmon, director of missions for Greer Baptist Association, will preach at the 10:30 a.m. worship service. Tony Serrao, a former minister of music at Pleasant Grove, will sing and conduct the music.

The anniversary service will include a video presentation of old church photographs, and the cast-iron bell from the former sanctuary will toll to welcome the worshippers to a covered-dish lunch.

Pleasant Grove was founded in 1833 with 14 charter members as an offshoot of Brushy Creek Baptist Church, and it was a member of the old Tyger River Baptist Association. It called its first full-time pastor in 1937 and completed the current sanctuary in 1949.

Pleasant Grove joined the new Greer Association in 1959 and established two churches – Riverside in 1976 and Providence in 1992 – also in that association.

The church has nearly 700 resident members. Danny Emory is pastor.
