Shiloh Baptist Church, Aiken, honored the achievements of its WMU mission groups, preschool through grade 12, on Sept. 7. The theme was “Lights, Camera, Action,” with the “Spotlight” on mission organizations. Children and youth told about a missionary kid or a missionary they studied or about a mission activity they had participated in this year. Thirty-three members and leaders participated.

Participating in “We’re Here for You” Day Nov. 8, the WMU of Calvary Baptist Church, Columbia, held a free garage sale. People dropping by were also given a brochure from the church, a New Testament and a gospel tract. Items left at the end of the day were taken to the Cooperative Ministries. Gwynn Pitts is director of WMU and Helen O’Cain is assistant director. Richard Ryals is pastor of Calvary.

Thirty-one members of West Springs Baptist Church, Union County Baptist Association, spent a week in July in Havre, Mont. The group worked with the children on the Rocky Boy Indian Reservation and did construction work at First Indian Baptist Church. Missionaries Carl and Rose McElreath, who work in that area, have since visited West Springs to share with the congregation, and a group from the church is planning to return to Montana next July.

Hunt’s Memorial Baptist Church, Easley, celebrated its 75th anniversary with a special service held on Nov. 8. Music was provided by the Hunt’s Choir, former member Jason Pittard, and Charlie Driggers of Greenville. Former pastors and the church’s oldest member – Ethel Taylor, 96 years old – were recognized. A video of the church’s first 75 years, produced by Tyler Huff, was presented. Recognition was also given to those who were ordained into the ministry at Hunt’s and are now serving at other churches. The church, which was named after the late Mrs. Mattie Hunt, was founded in 1933 and has had 18 pastors. J.H. Stanbury of Pickens was the first pastor and James Wiles is the current pastor.

Jessie and Deanna Moore and their son Dallon were baptized Nov. 8 by pastor Quinn Hooks at Evergreen Baptist Church, Effingham. Dedication was also held for the Moores’ younger children, Caroline and Tucker. The morning message delivered by Hooks was “Teach Your Children Well,” based on Deuteronomy 6:4-7.

A “pillow ministry” is among the many missions projects of Mountain Springs Baptist Church, Piedmont. Jean Talbot, a member of Mountain Springs, began making lap pillows to give to fellow cancer patients as a sign of encouragement. The project has grown, and the women of Mountain Springs have made more than 220 pillows for the veterans at Richard Campbell’s Veterans Home in Anderson. Below, several of the participants are making pillows which will be given to the residents of Riverside Nursing Center in Piedmont for Christmas. “Each pillow is filled with hope, faith, love and prayers,” says Talbot.

Jimmy Connelly, 86, was presented a certificate naming him deacon emeritus during the Oct. 26 homecoming service at Memorial Baptist Church, Saint George. Connelly is a veteran of World War II. He participated in nine amphibious landings in the Pacific in a Higgins boat. He and his wife Frances have been married 63 years. With Connelly is deacon chairman Bryan Jordan and pastor Clay Shook.

The youth of Evergreen Baptist Church, Effingham, recently held a canned food drive for Manna House, a local food bank. The youth went door to door on Nov. 1 in local neighborhoods passing out grocery bags and explaining their purpose, then returned to the houses to retrieve the bags on Nov. 8. Pictured here are the youth and adults who picked up the bags of food. More than 100 grocery bags of food were collected.
