What will you resolve to do in 2009?

The Baptist Courier

Many people will make New Year’s resolutions for 2009. Some will avow to lose weight, quit smoking, or save more money. For Christians, the New Year presents many opportunities to strengthen one’s faith. Many will sing the words, “I am resolved no longer to linger charmed by the world’s delight, Things that are higher, things that are nobler, Things that have allured my sight” (Baptist Hymnal, 1991).

Tommy Kelly

The unquestionable resolve of previous generations has set a clear example of faith service.

In the Nixville community of Hampton County, Benjamin and Elaine Ginn settled approximately 50 years ago. Although the allure of larger towns and other opportunities presented themselves, they made their home in this rural community. A priority within their home was faithful church attendance at the local Southern Baptist church. Through the years, the Ginns saw their children grow in their faith. This culminated in all four children making a profession of faith and being baptized.

During their married life, Benjamin and Elaine have experienced the highs and lows of church and personal life. Numerous pastors have served their church. Many births and baptisms have been celebrated, while many relatives and close friends have been eulogized for faithful service. Yet, the Ginns remained humble and faithful, regardless of the circumstances.

People like the Ginns constitute God’s churches worldwide. Although the world’s glory beckoned, many faithful, humble people have turned away from the worldly callings. Instead, they have established lives where vocations and Christian service are a priority. They are people who chose service over self-satisfaction, sacrifice over selfishness. Without such individuals, churches would cease to exist.

In 2009, may all Christians resolve to follow the direction of Christ and be more devoted to their families and churches.
