Economy Watch

The Baptist Courier

With the nation in recession’s grip, Southern Baptist agencies, including institutions that serve South Carolina Baptists, are enacting measures to deal with the economic downturn.

In our “Economy Watch,” Hunter Howard, retired president of the South Carolina Chamber of Commerce, warns that churches will experience more demand for ministry aid as the recession worsens. Read how our state convention is preparing to help churches who help those in need.

Other stories include a roundup of how SBC and SCBC organizations are tightening their budget belts; advice from Gary Horton on how churches can protect pastors’ retirement and insurance; and an observation from SCBC executive director-treasurer Jim Austin about the “spiritual receptivity” of non-Christians during difficult times.

The articles in today’s issue focus on denominational work. Look for stories in the near future on how the economy is impacting our churches – both as challenge and opportunity. – Editor
