Change self first

The Baptist Courier

There are so many things wrong with the world today. Where do we start to look for change? We are to start with ourselves. Tolstoy was quoted as saying, “Everybody thinks of changing humanity, and nobody thinks of changing himself.” Are we truly living as we should, or are we allowing our circumstances, the economy, and the world to dictate our approach to life and our fellow man? If one takes the time to stop and look around, one would see not only the discord of the world, but of those around us, in our own homes, and maybe, if one chooses to accept it, in one’s own life.

Acceptance is the answer to my problems. When I am disturbed, it is because it is unacceptable to me, and there will be no rest until I accept it and leave it at the foot of the cross. We can rest assured that nothing happens that God does not know, and all is according to the will of God. Until I accepted my addictions, I was not aware of the severity of my problems, and it was not until I accepted I was a sinner that I understood the cost of death.

Christ accepted me as I am, for I was not able to clean myself up and then go to God – nor can we change the world or one single person, but we are charged to love our neighbor, and does scripture not say we are to love unconditionally?

We can only offer the truth that Jesus has given us, show them the path, and pray for their deliverance. Some people will change when they see the light. Others change only when they feel the heat. Everyone wants change. Just be careful of what you ask for; you might just get it.
