Convention pays tribute to 200-year-old South Carolina Baptist churches

The Baptist Courier

One hundred thirty-three Southern Baptist churches in South Carolina that are least 200 years old were recognized at the State Evangelism Conference in Columbia Feb. 23-24.

A commemorative banner was produced for every church. Particular mention was given to Charleston First Baptist Church, which is more than three centuries old. The church was established in 1682 and was the first Baptist church in the South.

First Baptist Church, Columbia, the host church for the conference, is celebrating its 200th anniversary in 2009.

“These churches laid the foundation upon which over 2,100 South Carolina Baptist churches build today,” said Marshall Fagg, associate executive director of the evangelization and missions team. “This was a great opportunity to say thank you.”
