
Anderson University was declared the winner of the second annual blood drive competition between Anderson University and nearby rival Erskine College. Evans Whitaker, president of Anderson University, accepted the winner’s trophy at the Anderson-Erskine basketball game in Due West on Feb 9. Faculty, staff and students at the two schools gave a total of 224 pints of blood.

Emily Tanner, mother of Frankie Tanner, senior pastor at Mechanicsville Baptist Church, Welsh Neck Baptist Association, present a support gift from “The Servant’s Circle” of Rosehill Baptist Church of Georgetown County. Tanner will go to Nicaragua to preach and teach the first week of March. Emily Tanner did missionary work in Nicaragua several years ago. “It’s good to have a mom who also has a world vision plan,” said Tanner.

The children’s group from First Baptist Church, Clinton, observed Children’s Ministry Day Feb. 14. For several weeks they collected items for hospital care packages, which they assembled and delivered to the Laurens County Hospital.

Twenty-eight boys and girls of Lowrys First Baptist Church, Chester, participated in Children’s Ministry Day to share the love of Jesus with people in the community. This year’s theme was “Loving Hearts,” with an emphasis in health-care ministries. The children, with the support of the church family, prepared and distributed 75 bags of health-care items, handmade Valentine cards and chocolates to the Senior Companion volunteers of Chester County Senior Services, who assist at nursing homes and other senior adult agencies in the area. In addition to ministering to the volunteers, the children and their mission team leaders visited the sick and shut-ins in a local nursing center and in 26 homes.

First Baptist Church, Cross Hill, recently honored two of its members. Virginia Hipp (pictured at top), church librarian, and Ruth Sharpe, church clerk, have served the church for more than 20 years.

The youth missions department at Broadacres Baptist Church, Cayce, participated in the 2009 Souper Bowl of Caring. They collected money from the congregation for God’s Helping Hands, a local food bank. The group also collected non-perishable food items from neighbors in the area and delivered them to the food bank Feb. 4.

Margaret Tinsley was recognized Jan. 4 at Concord Baptist Church, Anderson, where she has served for more than 50 years as a teacher and department secretary for the children’s Sunday school. The church gave her a standing ovation, a bouquet of red roses, an engraved bracelet and a commemorative plaque. With Tinsley is Randy Blank, associate pastor of education and evangelism.

Dave Worthington, right, has been named director of missions for Welsh Neck Baptist Association. He will begin serving in April. Worthington gave his “From Vision to Victory” address to pastors/delegates from the association Feb. 10 at First Baptist Church, Hartsville. Search committee chairman Kevin Walters conveyed to the assembly that “God has helped us go through over 50 resumes to discover that one of our own” was the person for the job. Pastor Frankie Tanner, associational moderator, presented Worthington and his wife Elaine to the association.

Evergreen Baptist Church, Effingham, celebrated Women’s Sunday Feb. 15. Pictured are WMU president Janie Jordan with guest speaker Karen Andrews. Andrews did a dramatic presentation, “In Search of a Godly Woman,” based on Proverbs 31, and shared her testimony. She is a member of First Baptist Church, Darlington, and worked for “Just for Women” ministries for six years.

Virginia Cribb was honored during the January meeting of the Woman’s Missionary Union of Nebo Baptist Church, Britton’s Neck, for more than 50 years service. She was given a silver platter and a certificate of appreciation.

Eleven adults and 25 youth from Nebo Baptist and Reedy Creek Baptist churches, Marion Baptist Association, recently visited Disney World. They divided into smaller groups to enjoy the sights of Epcot, Christmas decorations and fireworks on New Year’s Eve. From top: The GAs, RAs and Mission Friends from First Baptist Church, Simpsonville (downtown and west campus) decorated more than 250 gift bags with words of encouragement and Valentine greetings. They donated gum, mints, M&Ms, sticky notes, tissue packs and pens to put into the bags as a thank-you gift for the staff at Hillcrest Hospital. The children of Memorial Baptist Church, Olar, held their seventh annual Connie Maxwell Children’s Home Valentine fund-raiser Feb. 8. A total of $470 was collected. On Feb. 15, Chandler Hiers and Taylor Lyons were crowned Valentine King and Queen for collecting the most money.

Pleasant Dale Baptist Church, Lancaster, dedicated its family life center Feb. 1. The 15,188-square-foot facility consists of a kitchen, work-out rooms, showers, gym, fellowship hall, youth center and a multi-purpose room that will serve as the interim worship center. Dale Roach, associational missionary for Moriah Baptist Association, was guest speaker. Jack Nunn has been senior pastor of Pleasant Dale since July 1998. The church has 317 active members.

Anderson mayor Terrence Roberts spoke at Anderson University’s 98th Founders Day convocation Feb. 11. Roberts applauded the university for its commitment to service and urged students to make consistent service to their communities a lifetime pledge. Anderson University was founded as Anderson College in 1911. The school has been affiliated with the South Carolina Baptist Convention since its inception.
