Von CockrellFred Levon “Von” Cockrell, 83, of Camden, a pastor who served many South Carolina churches, died May 20, 2009.
Born in Batesburg, he was interim pastor of Red Hill Baptist Church, Bishopville. He was ordained at Eastside Baptist Church and pastored the following South Carolina Baptist churches: Harmony of Elgin, Beaverdam of Cassatt, New Hope of Rembert, Harmony of Bethune, Antioch of Camden, Community Bible Church of Bishopville, and Mizpah of Bishopville.
He also served as interim pastor at Shamrock of Kershaw, DeKalb of Westville, and Pine View of Kershaw. In 1999, Cockrell was named pastor emeritus of Antioch Baptist Church.
He was a U.S. Navy World War II veteran and served in the Pacific. He was an avid Gamecocks fan. He also enjoyed carpentry, gardening and sports.
Survivors include his wife, Avie Tidwell Cockrell, five children, four stepchildren, 20 grandchildren and 26 great-grandchildren.
