I read with interest a letter in the May 28, 2009 edition of the Courier. The writer stated, “When I attended one of our state Baptist colleges, the religion department was so liberal that I came out questioning everything that I ever believed.” I find it interesting because often when we are challenged to think for ourselves, or be exposed to the views of others, it is always “liberal.”
I am afraid that we have reached a point as Baptists that we would rather have religious clone factories than thought-provoking halls of learning. Perhaps the apostle Paul’s words in Philippians 2:12 will still challenge us to “continue to work out your salvation with fear and trembling.” I have yet to meet anyone who has all the answers, whether the label be liberal or conservative.
