South Carolina pastor writes novel of spiritual discovery

The Baptist Courier

Randolph J. Carlson, pastor of Pleasant Hill Baptist Church in Hamer (Pee Dee Association), has written his first novel, “Directed by Light.”

The book’s protagonist is Frank Thornton, a handsome, intelligent, athletic “achiever” for whom everything seems to come easily – everything, that is, except matters spiritual.

Despite having been raised in a Christian home, Thornton rejects a relationship with God, opting instead to rely on his abundant natural gifts. However, when he finds himself facing situations that force him to confront spiritual realities, he finds his innate abilities lacking.

“How does God reach people?” the author asks. “Each person travels a different road in coming to a saving knowledge of Jesus. God draws people in many different ways. Often those ways involve intense inner turmoil.”?”Directed by Light” posits the hope that God can be found in the storms of life.

A native of New York, Carlson came to South Carolina in 1971 and graduated from Clemson University in 1975. He lives in Dillon with his wife and two children.

“Directed by Light” can be purchased online at Amazon.com or BarnesandNoble.com.
