A nursing home ministry that began 44 years ago at Inman First Baptist Church continues to flourish in Inman’s four nursing homes, with volunteers leading the way.
The ministry began in 1965 with the opening of the Inman Nursing Home. The home’s owner contacted James Bruce, pastor of Inman First Baptist, about conducting Sunday services for the 10 residents. Bruce led services until 1973, at which time the Golden Age Nursing Home also began operation.
The need arose for both facilities to be included in the Sunday services. Bruce asked church member Ken Gowan to coordinate the ministry at both facilities. Gowan enlisted volunteers from the church and led the ministry until his death in 1976.
The church elected Eddie Whitaker as Gowan’s replacement. Whitaker has served for the past 33 years. In 1995, he began conducting worship services at a third facility, Camp Care Nursing Home. Later, nearby Magnolia Manor was added. The additional responsibility meant that more volunteers would be needed, and church members responded.
Worship services are held at the facilities each Sunday morning for residents and staff members – allowing residents to “go to church” because the church has come to them. Services consist of familiar hymns, scripture, prayer and a brief inspirational message. Residents say they enjoy the old hymns that they grew up singing.
Most of the nursing home residents were once active members of their local churches. They can no longer go to their church because of health reasons, but say they are thankful they can have church in the nursing home. Residents often arrive early to the dining room or activity area and sit for a period of time eagerly awaiting the arrival of the volunteers.
In addition to the worship services, volunteers lead Bible studies and special music programs at the nursing homes. Another volunteer makes sure every resident gets a gift at Christmas.
