Rehoboth Baptist Church, Piedmont, celebrates 100 years

Rehoboth Baptist Church in Piedmont will celebrate its centennial on Aug. 9 with a special worship service.

Although it was formed in 1909, the church traces its roots to 1832, when the Methodist church in Piedmont sponsored a mission in a one-room building in the Rehoboth community, located between Piedmont and Pelzer.

By 1909, there were 98 people living in the community. The people who attended church had to walk, ride horses or ride in buggies, but only a few people attended worship at the one-room building.

Nineteen Christians joined together and bought the building from the Methodist church for $250 and established Rehoboth Baptist Church.

Today, 100 years later, the church property has increased to three parcels of land with a large brick building, fellowship building, parsonage and storage building. Sam Fordham serves as pastor.

The centennial celebration will begin at 10:30 a.m. with special music by One Voice. Former pastor Ralph Bagwell will deliver the sermon. Lunch will follow in the fellowship hall.
