More than 2,500 students are involved in one of 31 South Carolina Baptist College Ministry groups and Bible studies on college and university campuses.
During the 2008-2009 academic year, 250 students made professions of faith through BCM, and more than 1,500 attended small-group Bible study meetings.
In missions, BCM reported 104 students appointed to serve with the BCM mission program, sending students in international teams to China, Peru, South Africa, Bangladesh, Nepal, India, Philippines, Ecuador, Peru, Nova Scotia, and nationally to Maryland, Kentucky, and the South Carolina Lowcountry. Local BCM groups raised more than $50,000 to support student missionaries.
Earlier this year, 889 South Carolina BCM students and leaders participated in the Converge Collegiate Conference.
The South Carolina Baptist Convention has eight full-time collegiate ministers and two part-time collegiate ministers at public and private university campuses. Other campuses are led by Baptist college-employed campus ministers, semester missionaries, or volunteer directors. The SCBC operates nine Baptist student centers/offices.
“BCM sees a lot of Southern Baptist students, but we draw from other denominations and also have seekers coming to us,” said Ken Owens, director, collegiate ministry group, SCBC. “A lot of these students would never cross a street and enter a church but are drawn to BCM to belong and connect.
“We are calling on South Carolina Baptists to pray during this new school year that the gospel will be lifted up on our campuses and that students will be lifted up as the church leaders of tomorrow.” – SCBC
