Church is healthcare answer

The Baptist Courier

It is with sadness that I realized Mr. Carson Riggins’ argument (Sept. 17, “No loopholes in my Bible”) was fundamentally flawed and not biblically based. I agree on Jesus’ priorities of healing and how to worship and serve him. I also agree that there is a moral obligation of taking care of others, but nowhere in the Bible does it state that the government is morally obligated to help people.

In Acts 2:42-47 and Acts 4:32-36, it speaks about the early church coming together to meet the needs of everyone, which would have included healthcare. They were under no orders by the government to provide care for others; they did it because of a sincere love for Jesus Christ and wanting to share that love with others.

I would disagree that the “free-market friends” have gotten us into this mess. It is government interference in healthcare since the 1960s that has been one of the factors to drive up costs and hampered the free market from working more efficiently. It is a shame that some greedy people have given the pursuit of happiness (free market) a bad name. I think “ethical capitalism” would go a long way toward helping to change people’s views that socialism/government control is a better way – it’s just not.

I challenge Mr. Riggins to read his Bible to reveal the truth that government is not the answer, but the church through the love of Jesus Christ.
