Cross Roads Church turns 100

First building, finished in 1910.

Cross Roads Baptist Church, Greer, will celebrate its 100th birthday Sept. 13-20.

On Sept. 16, 1909, a Baptist church formed with 16 members and was named Cross Roads. A building was erected on two acres of land the following year. In 1919, with the Great Depression approaching, a tithing club was formed, and farmers in the congregation dedicated parcels of their land exclusively for raising funds for the church.

Current sanctuary built in 1959.

The church went to full-time services in 1947 and held its first Vacation Bible School in 1948. The current education building was built in 1953 and the sanctuary six years later. A family life center was added in 1976.

The church has ordained six men to the ministry. Today, members are involved in a number of ministries, including Squares of Love Quilt Ministry, Meals on Wheels, a food pantry and clothes closet, as well as ministries to shut-ins. This fall, the church will begin offering a weekday preschool.
