The Baptist Courier

The current church was built in 1961.

Woodside Baptist Church, Greenville, will hold a centennial homecoming celebration on Oct. 18 beginning at 10 a.m.

In addition to music, a history presentation and a meal, the service will feature a sermon by Terry Wingate, who was ordained by Woodside in 1973.

Woodside Baptist Church was built on the corner of Woodside Ave. and Fourth St. in the Woodside Mill community of Greenville County in 1909 by the mill company for a reported $21,000. The church was constituted as a Baptist church in South Carolina on April 2, 1905. The church building was dedicated June 26, 1910. The building remained in use until 1961, when it was razed and rebuilt by the church membership.

First building constructed in 1909.

In 1902 the company began building houses in what became the Woodside Mill community. A total of 442 houses were eventually built and were occupied by employees of the mill. In 1930 the U.S. census reported 2,942 people living in the community. One of the houses was furnished by the company as a parsonage until 1967.

From its beginning, the church has maintained a Sunday school and in 1918 formed the WMU. Throughout its history, Woodside has exhibited strong evidence of Christian faith and Baptist principles. The church today has a vibrant congregation with significant young members engaged in being a strong New Testament church.
